This project involved the masterplanning and design for an arts and after-school centre in the Valley of a Thousand Hills, Kwa Zulu Natal.
The design for the sloped site draws on the surrounding mountain scape and on local skills and construction techniques. The building is arranged along a single central access which allows for open, flexible space for co-learning, exhibition, student performances and exhibitions to take place flexibly in the wide corridor spaces.
Excited at the visions and ambitions of Imbeleko Foundation of Hope, Counterspace embarked on providing its director with a visualisation and masterplan to align with her readings of potential in a particular area in Valley of a Thousand Hills, Kwa-Zulu Natal.
The scheme provides a conglomeration of multiple potential touristic and cultural sites of interest for the region, including a new arts centre, sports hub, a visitor accommodation resort and local manufacturing skills workshop. These proposed sites of interest would be linked by a legible vehicular and hiking trail route, providing a cohesive experience for tourists or participators in the area. The route also harnesses the incredible abundance of natural views and features.
