- South Africa is one of the world’s most diverse countries, but it also remains one of the most unequal societies despite significant progress since the end of apartheid. Inequalities strongly correlate with race, and in central Johannesburg, extreme economic inequality within the city exposes young people from low-income backgrounds to social risks such as a lack of a quality education, violence and social isolation. Limited access to recreational facilities and quality education can also undermine children’s ability and desire to learn.
- Drawing from Skateistan’s incredible vision for children, Counterspace provided a refresh to SkateCreate and administrative interior spaces for Skateistan’s Johannesburg headquarters. Wall mural super-graphics were developed through workshops with young users of the space, providing playful forms and geometries which were interpreted by the design team. The furniture was conceptualised as an interior take on skate-park ramps and climbing surfaces, with the aim to provide an exciting imagination landscape which would promote spaces for interaction, play and learning. Hidden within various new units are storage voids for play equipment.
